TDS Water Testing in Smithfield, NC
Total dissolved solids is the first number that matters when you choose a purification system. It is measured in parts per million and covers everything dissolved in the water: calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate, chloride, nitrate and more. The EPA's secondary guideline is 500 ppm, set for taste and scaling, not health.
A TDS reading does not tell you what is in the water. It tells you how much. Two homes at 450 ppm can have very different problems, so a TDS test is the starting point, not the whole answer.
Bear Water Purification connects Smithfield, NC homeowners with plumbers who test TDS, hardness, chlorine and pH at the tap and at the RO faucet, then compare the two to work out membrane rejection. When the numbers point at something specific, like nitrate, arsenic or PFAS, the next step is a certified lab test.
On an existing RO system the test takes two minutes and tells you whether the membrane still works. Rejection below about 80 to 85 percent is the usual replacement point.
